One really effective way to convince the wife

The big-bike community has been abuzz lately with a flurry of new or updated models from Yamaha with its MT-07 and MT-09, Triumph and its new Trident, and Aprilia with the RS660. An all-new machine from the Italian manufacturer best known for its RSV4 and Tuono superbikes, the RS660 is a middleweight sport bike that should make things very interesting in a segment dominated by the Yamaha R6 and Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Billed somewhat as a friendlier, more affordable sibling of the RSV4, the RS660 uses an all-new 660cc, parallel-twin engine based on the 1100cc of the RSV4. With an 81mm bore and 63.9mm stroke, plus a 270° crank, the Euro 5-certified motor generates 100hp at 10,500rpm. The rev limiter can be moved up to 11,500rpm for a few more horses or to alter the power curve. Peak torque of 67Nm is reached at 8,500rpm, with 80% of this available from 4,000rpm. The injection system consists of dual 48mm throttle bodies with intake ducts of varying lengths for optimal delivery at high and medium speeds.

The newly designed chassis uses an aluminum frame and swingarm, with the engine as a stressed member. A short 1,370mm wheelbase and 24.1⁰ steering head promise exceptional handling, supported by a 41mm USD Kayaba fork and an adjustable rear shock absorber. The Brembo braking system uses dual 320mm discs in front and radial mount calipers and disc at the rear. Lastly, the wheels are shod in Pirelli tires measuring 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 180/55 ZR17 at the rear.

A full-electronic suite ensures that riders both new and experienced can get the best out of the RS660 experience: traction control, wheelie control, cruise control, quick shifter, adjustable engine braking, and variable engine mapping. An advanced multi-map Cornering ABS optimizes braking and anti-lock intervention by monitoring lateral acceleration, front brake pressure, lean angle, pitch, and yaw.

All of this Italian goodness will ring the bell to the tune of P860,000 when the RS660 lands on our shores in summer 2021, courtesy of its Philippine distributor Bikerbox. But wait, there’s more! If you pre-book now with a P200,000 down payment, you only need to pay an additional P598,000 when the bike is finally turned over to you. You save P62,000 off the sticker price, so you’ll look good to your chief financial officer (*wink wink*).

With a wide range of accessories such as race-only exhaust system by Akrapovič, software for an inverted gearbox MotoGP-style, tank guards, billet aluminum levers, and whatnot, you’ll probably want to make the most of your future sport-bike budget.
