Guys, the 2022 BMW 5-Series is here

It received a facelift and tech updates

When people think midsize luxury sedans, the BMW 5-Series is easily top-of-mind. Aside from being a luxurious weekday warrior for the discerning executive, it is also a powerful vehicle that the same executive can take for a spirited weekend drive.

After seeing the M5 Competition, and what some have described as its excesses, local fans of the 5-Series sedans can now experience the new design in the latest iteration of the G30 5er that has now arrived at our shores and is only available in the 520i Luxury trim.

The older G30 5er was no slouch when it came to looks, yes, and this new facelift (or “Life Cycle Impulse” as BMW anoraks would call it) just builds upon the older G30’s road presence and sharp features. It comes with a redesigned front fascia with angular adaptive LED headlights, and its rear gets touched up with black-rimmed LED taillights with a solid L-shaped light signature.

Of course, the cabin has the premium look and feel that you would expect from a vehicle in this class. It is upholstered in Dakota Leather, with open-pored ash trunkwood trim and pearl chrome accents, complemented by velour floor mats. It also has a Sensatech leather instrument cluster, and ambient lighting.

Other luxuries include four-zone climate control, soft-close doors, a kick sensor for the electric boot lid, an automatic rear sunshade, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional grants the driver a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, iDrive 7 with Gesture controls, and for the first time in a BMW, Android Auto support (alongside Apple CarPlay, of course).

As for engine choices, it will come with the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder B48 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Power output is 184hp @ 5,000-6,500rpm and 290Nm @ 1,350-4,250rpm. Although this may disappoint those looking for a “silky six,” we can assure you that this engine is more than capable for a sedan of this size.

With all of these cosmetic and technological upgrades, one would expect the price to also be “upgraded.” But despite these updates, the 520i Luxury is still being offered at the same P4,290,000 price tag its predecessor had, with the same five-year (or 200,000km) warranty that BMW offers. Now that sounds like a good deal.
