Kia releases sketches of its new compact SUV

To be sold in Korea later this year, followed by other markets

Kia wants us to know it does keep its promise. Remember the Korean carmaker’s concept SUVs showcased at the Seoul Motor Show in March? One of those is due to be launched in the coming months, and the manufacturer has just issued a couple of sketches of the production version.

Based on the SP Signature concept, Kia’s new global small SUV is designed with millennials in mind. Its long hood, strong character lines and tapering glasshouse exude sportiness that young people love. New LED headlamps that have a “three-dimensional light graphic” and a “highly technical diamond pattern” have been fitted to the new crossover. Parts of the lamps extend to the radiator grille, giving it an air of luxury. The same styling cues can be seen at the rear.

In a statement, Kia styling head Byung Chul Juh said: “We have created a car that stands out everywhere, from the city to the countryside. Its robust yet sporty design will be matched by a wide range of features and technologies that are universally suited to younger buyers in markets around the world. Our new small SUV is a proposition that no other car in its class will match.”

The still-unnamed compact SUV is set to be available in South Korea in the second half of 2019, to be followed by other markets. With more and more people opting to purchase crossovers, this seems like a step in the right direction for the brand. We guess the more SUVs, the merrier.
