Land Rover PH shows off the all-new Defender 110 (and we love it)

Here are the locally available versions and their prices

The much-awaited reincarnation of Land Rover’s iconic off-roader is finally here in the Philippines. While buyers can expect the new-generation Defender to be as capable on rough terrain as its agricultural ancestor, it also promises to be a much more refined animal on paved surfaces. Coventry Motors Corporation, the authorized distributor of the British SUV brand in our territory, just gave us a chance to meet the thing up close and personal.

Initially available in long-wheelbase form called the 110, the all-new Defender will be offered in four versions known as “packs.” Here are their prices:

  • Urban Pack – P6,310,000
  • Country Pack – P6,360,000
  • Adventure Pack – P6,440,000
  • Explorer Pack – P6,610,000

Pricier packs obviously get more kit that allows the Defender to confidently venture onto more challenging paths. There is also a special First Edition variant that retails for a whopping P9,390,000.

We were lucky to be shown the range-topping Explorer Pack-equipped Defender. Its appearance is further enhanced with wheel arch trim pieces, large front and rear mud guards, and matte-black decals on the hood. Other exterior bits include a roof rack and a side-mounted gear carrier. The Explorer Pack also comes equipped with a snorkel and a step ladder, both of which were not fitted to the vehicle when we previewed it.

Since we weren’t anywhere near slippery trails and water crossings, we were content to be taken for a quick ride around the block by no less than Coventry Motors general manager Chris Ward. The British executive demonstrated some of the capabilities of the powertrain. A 48V mild-hybrid system pairs the 3.0-liter Ingenium six-cylinder engine with a small electric motor for a total output of 395hp and a total torque figure of 550Nm. Power delivery is exceptionally smooth with the turbocharger and the electric supercharger practically canceling out each other’s deficiencies.

As you can clearly see here, the all-new Defender’s interior is no longer spartan. PHOTOS BY MIGGI SOLIDUM

Air suspension is standard on all Defender 110 versions. The ride quality is excellent without being too floaty. The suspension system isolates the cabin from even the biggest of potholes. Best of all, it has the ability to alter the Defender’s ride height with a simple push of a button—just like in the Discovery and the Range Rover.

The all-new Land Rover Defender will be formally launched on August 1st. Better start priming the wife for your next big-ticket purchase.
