While Maserati is known as a luxury performance brand, it also has a rich motorsports heritage. In 1926, the company made its racing debut at the Targa Florio. Some 31 years after that, Juan Manuel Fangio won the championship in the legendary 250F. More recently, the MC12 had 22 victories under its belt in the FIA GT series.

Now, the Italian automaker is going back to its roots as it has just announced its intent to compete in the 2023 season of Formula E. While relatively new to electrification, the brand has its sights on a 100% battery-powered lineup which includes the MC20 and the Grecale, and all-new versions of the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio.

Maserati’s Formula E fighter will be built to Gen3 standards. Aside from being lighter and faster than Gen2 machines, it will have a front powertrain that boosts the car’s regenerative capacity to 600kW.

Now, we still have over a year to see if Maserati will be successful in its Formula E campaign. But it’s nice to know that carmakers are turning to electrification even in motorsports, and this could help greatly in the collective effort to make future vehicles more sustainable.
