A separate racing series for women is a pretty controversial issue. Many argue that events solely for the fairer sex is a step backward in pushing for gender equality in motorsports. But some do it anyway like D1 Lights, a spin-off of the D1 Grand Prix that’s exclusive to female drivers. In the US, there is a competition called the Rebelle Rally, a navigational race that’s restricted to all-women teams.

Mitsubishi is joining the 2021 Rebelle Rally with a rather special Outlander crossover. If you’re a fan of the Dakar Rally, you’ll know that the car’s red, black and yellow livery can only be inspired by the Pajero that emerged victorious in 2001 (back when the event actually concluded at the Senegalese capital). Behind the wheel of the SUV was Jutta Kleinschmidt, the only woman to win the prestigious rally.

The colorful Outlander will not only celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kleinschmidt’s victory, but it will also mark Mitsubishi’s 40th year in North America. The Rebelle Rally is scheduled on October 7 to 16, and will cover over 2,000km in Nevada and California. This is the third time that the automaker is participating in the event, having fielded the Eclipse Cross and the Outlander PHEV on previous occasions.
