Today, we received exciting news about Ford Philippines gearing up to introduce the 14th-generation F-150 to our market. Exciting because, well, the full-size pickup truck which the distributor launched last year was the 13th-generation model. And not only did we learn that the company was going to release the new edition of its big workhorse, but that the variant slated to come here would be equipped with “a 3.0L Power Stroke turbo diesel powerplant.”

That’s a welcome development not just for Ford fans but also for pickup enthusiasts who prefer oil-burners to petrol propulsion.

Now, because some of our readers are truly resourceful, one of them was able to dig up the following Car & Driver article right after reading our piece.

Apparently, the American automaker has pulled out the F-150’s Power Stroke turbo diesel option—the very same one that will reside under the hood of the upcoming Philippine-market model—in the US. The reason given by the motoring publication was that Ford would like to focus on the more popular EcoBoost gasoline engines.

Here’s a portion from the article:

A Ford representative explained that the decision to drop the diesel was made because “our customers overwhelmingly order our EcoBoost V6 gasoline engines.” The Power Stroke 3.0-liter V6 first appeared in the previous-generation F-150 in 2018 and was carried over unchanged into the new truck for 2021. It is not especially surprising to see the Power Stroke fall by the wayside—it produced just 250hp, which made it the least powerful engine in the lineup, easily surpassed by the 290hp 3.3-liter V6 and the 325hp EcoBoost 2.7-liter V6.

Note that we’re not implying that all of this is a bad thing. We bet that there are many Filipino pickup buyers out there who like diesel more than gasoline. One market’s trash is another market’s treasure, we suppose.

But yeah, it seems we’re essentially getting what Americans are now steering clear of.
