The BMW 2-Series Coupe is a fabulous sports car. Since its introduction in 2014, it has won many hearts and put countless smiles on the faces of its owners. But after a couple of facelifts and racy M versions, the seven-year-old model is ripe for a redesign. And so, after years of waiting, the second-generation 2-Series Coupe finally breaks cover.

The new model looks similar yet entirely different at the same time. The design inspiration is said to have come from the classic BMW 02. The latest 2-Series Coupe looks sharper and sportier than the outgoing car. The front clip features a new bumper design. The 02-inspired round LED headlamps bookend the signature kidney grille. Movable flaps take the place of fixed grille slats for better aerodynamics. Sleek lines flow on the sides, while the compact sculpted taillights replace the big units of old. The front and rear tracks have been widened, and the wheelbase has been extended for better handling. There is a choice of 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels, depending on the variant you’re getting.

Right behind the leather tiller is a fully digital instrument display. An 8.8-inch infotainment screen controls the Harman Kardon surround-sound system. And then, there’s an automatic three-zone climate-control system, bucket seats with plenty of bolstering, and a 40:20:40-split folding rear bench for a little practicality. Finally, backlit trim on the doors completes the interior’s sporty look.

There are three available powertrain options. Standard models will have either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline or diesel engine. The former puts out 184hp and 300Nm, while the latter gets a 48V mild-hybrid system and is good for 190hp and 400Nm. But the all-wheel-drive M240i xDrive receives the most muscle with a six-cylinder motor producing 374hp and 500Nm. All engines are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, and the car has the usual bevy of electronic aids so drivers can safely enjoy the 2-Series Coupe at the limit.

Production of the all-new 2-Series Coupe will be at BMW’s San Luis Potosí factory in Mexico. Prospective buyers will have six months to save up as the model will hit showrooms at the beginning of 2022.
