Mercedes-Benz is in the process of electrifying its entire product lineup, giving each of its ICE-powered nameplates an electric counterpart under the EQ sub-brand. It consists mainly of crossovers and SUVs, with the EQS being the sole sedan in the portfolio. Unfortunately, it carries a price tag that isn’t meant for everyone.

Those looking for a more affordable alternative to the EQS can find it in the newly revealed EQE at the IAA Mobility car show. This is the E-Class’s electric counterpart and shares a handful of elements with its larger sibling, like the EVA2 architecture that they’re both built on.

It also carries the same aerodynamically egg-shaped design language as the EQS, but with a shorter wheelbase and overhangs, and recessed elements. It’s available with wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches, and has two exterior packages to pick from—AMG Line or Electric Art. The former has a sportier, more aggressive style that is in line with Mercedes’s performance division. The latter maintains an elegant, smoother appearance.

Despite having a wheelbase that is 90mm shorter than the EQS, the EQE’s dimensions are comparable to the CLS four-door coupe (4,946mm long, 1,961mm wide and 1,512mm tall). Mercedes says that the interior volume also exceeds that of the current E-Class with more shoulder room and cabin length.

There are several optional extras available for the EQE, like the MBUX Hyperscreen, automatic comfort doors (at the front), and two versions of rear-axle steering (4.5° and 10°) that reduce the turning circle down to 10.7m.

With a total battery capacity of 90kWh and a single electric motor at the rear, the EQE 350 is good for 288hp and 530Nm. It can go as far as 660km on a single charge. More trim levels and performance versions with as much as 671hp are planned.

Pricing is not available yet, but staggered launches will take place by mid-2022. Interestingly, the car will be produced in two places: Bremen (Germany) for the global market, and Beijing for the Chinese market.
