The Smart Forease+ is one cute electric city car

It’s still a show car for now, to be presented in Geneva

Last year, at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, minicar maker Smart displayed the Forease, a cute, all-electric concept car. Made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the brand, the small (and roofless) show car easily stood out in a sea of more conventional-looking automobiles. However, it had its share of critics who complained about the absence of sun protection. Smart was then, er, smart to acknowledge the objection. Hence the Forease+ you see here.

Based on the Forease, the Forease+ is a lot like the original version, but with the addition of subtle exterior elements like the lights and the “less playful” paint job. Of course, the biggest difference between the two show cars is the installation of a roof, which is a hard but light shell covered in soft fabric. This roof can be effortlessly put in place or removed depending on your whim.

To be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this coming week, the Forease+ is just a preview of the things to come for Smart. By 2020, the company’s current offerings—Fortwo, Fortwo Cabrio and Forfour—will all be using electric propulsion. With the fun, quirky appearance of these diminutive city cars from Daimler, electric vehicles for urban dwellers promise to be anything but boring. If only we had them in our market.
