A low-slung sports car like the Mercedes-AMG C63 S isn’t normally the first thing one would fit a roof-mounted luggage carrier on to. These are normally found perched atop heavily loaded vans and SUVs. But the guys at AMG think that even the sleekest of coupes should be able to accommodate one, because owners couldn’t be bothered driving something a bit more practical to begin with.
The Mercedes-AMG roof box is a bit different from what you’d normally slap onto your crossover’s roof rack. Aside from being predictably more expensive than off-the-shelf equipment, Mercedes-AMG claims that these luggage carriers are far more suited to fitting the swooping profile of several of the company’s products.
Aside from the bullet-shaped front, these boxes are equipped with a vertical fin and trick diffusers. Apparently, these aerodynamic enhancements allow the luggage carrier to effortlessly slice through the air as the Mercedes-AMG car it is attached to munches through the miles at speed. There is even a sleeker version, designed for coupes because you absolutely need a roof box on your GT Black Series.
Despite its appearances, the Mercedes-AMG roof box is far more practical than you think. It can accommodate up to 70kg or 410L of stuff which is probably more than enough additional room in case your A-Class hatchback runs out of space. Sadly, these carriers have a speed restriction of 130km/h so you can go flat out on the Autobahn.
