Watches and cars…cars and watches. Those two always go together well. If you meet a car guy, chances are he’s also a watch dude. And vice versa. Watch companies know this all too well, which is why you’ll find a lot of timepieces that take inspiration from automotive marques—like the Icon Duesey and the Bremont MkII Chronograph.

But why settle for watches merely inspired by cars, when you can get one that is literally made from recycled car parts? That’s the concept behind the products of Danish brand REC Watches. Launched just in February 2014, the brand got its name from “recover, recycle and reclaim.” And also because it sounds like “wreck,” according to the official website.

The proposition is simple: They’ll find a classic automobile, salvage the parts that can be made into watches, and then sell the pieces to car-crazy watch aficionados. For now, they have four main car donors: the Ford Mustang, the Porsche 911, the Mini Mark I and the Mini Cooper.

You’re probably thinking: How sure are we that the watches truly have parts sourced from the aforementioned cars? REC has a ready answer for you:

If the visually rough surface of the dial—coupled with the trustworthy assurance of our company—does not persuade you, do not worry. Not only are we prepared to guarantee the origin of your watch’s recycled material, we also provide a certificate of authenticity and the original image of the recycled object’s logbook with every product.

REC says about 400 to 800 watches can be made from a single donor car. Each of these wristwatches will be stamped with the car’s VIN. How cool is that?
