Rebuilt Rockwell Bridge to open July 29 evening

Link between Makati and Mandaluyong has 2 more lanes

Have you been waiting for the Rockwell Bridge to reopen? PHOTO FROM MARK VILLAR

Over two years ago, we wrote several articles on why the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge (also known as the Rockwell Bridge) should not be closed for reconstruction. Aside from it being just eight years old at the time, adding two more lanes will do nothing to alleviate the chronic gridlock that plagued the area. But the Department of Public Works and Highways was adamant that rebuilding the river crossing was really necessary, and promptly closed it in January 2019.

However, if DPWH Secretary Mark Villar’s Facebook post is anything to go by, the Rockwell Bridge will be accessible to motorists once again tomorrow (July 29). Construction was estimated to take 30 months, and it seems like the project was indeed finished within that time frame. The official even stated the exact time of the reopening (8pm), but we suggest that you avoid the area until the inauguration formalities are over and done with.

With four lanes instead of two, the rebuilt bridge will have room for more vehicles than ever before—although we’re not entirely sure if that’s the solution we need. We’re eager to see if this will truly have a positive effect on the traffic situation.
