If you live a reasonable distance from Tagaytay City—which is near the currently hyperactive Taal Volcano—then you must have experienced substantial ashfall descend upon you and your property. And that includes your beloved car, obviously.

Yesterday, we shared with you a very basic way of minimizing the damage of volcanic matter to your vehicle, courtesy of Toyota Motor Philippines. Said advisory simply implored affected car owners to hose down the vehicle with pressurized water and to bring the car to the service center if its engine bay has significant ash deposits.

Now comes a more detailed set of advice from Ford Philippines, which we feel has more real-world usefulness. Below are the eight tips the American automaker has sent us, printed word for word:

1. Keep vehicles under cover as much as possible.

2. Do not remove ash by sweeping or brushing as it may cause scratches on the vehicle body. Remove it by rinsing with water using a garden hose on low pressure, while wearing appropriate dust mask and eye gear.

3. Lift the wiper blades off the windscreen, and ensure both glass and wiper rubber are cleared of ash deposits.

4. Ensure the areas around the fuel door and the door opening are cleaned prior to refuelling your vehicle to prevent contaminants from entering the fuel tank.

5. The engine air cleaner should be inspected by a qualified technician and replaced where dust accumulation has occurred.

6. The area under the hood or in the engine bay should also be inspected and cleaned by qualified personnel to avoid any damage.

7. For people driving in areas with heavy ashfall, have the pollen filter replaced at the first opportunity to ensure it does not clog up evaporators and vehicle occupants do not breathe in any contaminants.

8. Avoid driving while significant ash deposits remain on the road. If driving cannot be avoided, use the vehicle climate control system on recirculated-air mode to reduce unwanted dust and odor entering your vehicle.
